So I can feel better about the one I just made.

I hate myself. I should’ve looked out better.

I backed up next to a lamppost and I scraped the side of my car and slightly dented it.

I pushed the dent back a bit from the inside but still..

Here is my car in better times.

I was delivering medical equipment to a nursing home, and went to back my van into a spot. There were three spots between each big concrete pillar, so I decided I’d go into the middle spot...except there was no middle spot. The row I picked had only two spots, so I slammed the right side of my van into the pillar and scraped it about 4 feet, then scraped it more pulling away from it.

Adding insult to injury, the pillars were painted yellow, and a lot of the paint rubbed off on my nice, new white work van. Luckily I got it cleaned off before my boss saw it, but that's the last time I went into that garage.

I’ve run a few red lights, launched my dad’s old car over a curb in a classic gas-instead-of-brake blunder, made a few unsafe lane changes after failing to check my blind spots, etc.

The worst was hitting a puddle on a dirt road at ~30mph, though... Turned out to be a pot hole, of course, and destroyed a CV joint. Luckily nothing else was damaged, but it’s not a good feeling to know you just lost a bunch of money by being an idiot.

I cut someone off then turned right, almost hitting a hydrant

I slid in the snow onto someone’s lawn

I backed into a pole, a planter and my house at low speeds while parking

I side swiped a fire hydrant while pulling out of a parking spot

I backed into my trashcan while pulling out of my driveway

I went the wrong way on a 2 way street on a very dark night.

One, 2 and/or 3 things happened to cause all of these things:

Colorado needs better road maintenance

I’m an Idiot

I shouldnt have got my license with no knowledge of driving stick then bought a 20 year old manual transmissioned vehicle in the dead of winter in a state with bipolar weather patterns

Just this winter, after putting fresh rims that are quite rare, I tried snow drifting around an entrance ramp, came in too hot, slammed on the brakes and oversteered up over the curb and took out a reflective marker, along with my tie rod and brand new rim.

I also took out a mailbox after swerving out of the way of what I thought was a turtle, but only turned out to be a chunk of asphalt. Shit sucks

Waiting at a stoplight at a rather large intersection. I’m in the middle lane (of three lanes) when the light turns green. I must have spaced out and forgotten what lane I was in, so I aimed for the inside lane at the other end of the intersection. I cut off an SUV. I felt absolutely terrible about that for a while afterwards.

End of the first day back from summer vacation in high school... I was driving in my parent’s Chevy Silverado 1500. There was a huge traffic jam in the school parking lot. I got impatient and found room to get by the jam using a bit of grass. I just had to get by this one van going the opposite direction and at that moment, we both ended up moving into each other. I scraped the shit out of the fender of this woman’s van (of whom I had a crush on her daughter) and gouged the bed section past the cab of my parents truck quite good. I felt anger and pain from that incident for at least a month. My parents ended up settling out of pocket as it was just her work van.

Another time, still a youngster in my first Integra, I cut the apex too much and clipped a storm drain with my right rear tire. It took a HUGE chunk out of the sidewall. I’m surprised the tire didn’t pop. Same car, later on ... I misjudged an opening in traffic trying to reach the center median. All the lanes of traffic suddenly came to a screeching halt and it was as if I had parted the Red sea. SUCH a bad situation.

Leaving high school graduation practice I took a corner too fast. My car at first slid wide entering the other lane and just barely missing a car. The car then proceeded to perform an almost complete 360, narrowly missing a rock wall on the inside of the turn and stopping just before a stream/moat in front of someones house. They were outside doing yard work and gave me the stink eye. Needless to say that slowed me down and made me want to become a better driver.

Driving along looking for a turn and rammed into a bunch of construction barrels, in a rental, and my phone was out of batteries, and I didn’t have any clue where I was since I was going to a new site on the opposite coast. Missed my meeting, had to call Avid and figure out WTF to do, had to do a field sobriety check/breathalyzer (don’t drink anymore, but the cop figured only someone drunk would be so dumb).

So dumb...

Stuck in snow. Called wife to rescue me. Rope not strong enough to tow. Snapped. Used wife’s car to push my car out of the snow (from the side). Left big dent in rear door. Oh well, it was an Aveo.

One time I was leaving from my college and I drove over the parking curb.

Kinja'd!!!

I don’t know what was going through my head at the time. The thing was, the parking curbs were only set up in the first row closest to the college campus in all the parking lots. I thought it was there for some reason that day. I reversed out and my car was fine.

Also last week I was doing a U-turn at a signal light and I drove the left side of my car over the skinny median divider of the road. I made myself look like a total fool LOL

horrible representation of my dumminess:

One night, I think it was five years ago, I was driving home at 2:00 AM. It was pouring buckets and buckets of rain, I was on an unfamiliar hill with a slight crest, and I was super tired, trying to turn left. I oopsed and turned into oncoming. I drove over the somewhat wide grassy median to correct this issue, and then proceeded to pretend it never happened. Hooray for neophyte driver mistakes!

For those in NoVA, this was the intersection of 28 and New Braddock Road.

I was looking at an apartment in a new construction building, there were a number of huge dumpsters in the parking lot and I very specifically remember thinking to myself, "man, those dumpsters are HUGE!" Then after meeting with the building representative, my head full of numbers and ideas I went out to my car, scribbled some notes in my apartment hunting book, and glanced in the rearview mirror, all I could see was a huge, green construction dumpster... "oh, man those dumpsters are HUGE!" I thought to myself as I backed up... Turns out it wasn't so much that the dumpster was huge, as that it was very close.

Worst: Parallel parking and scraping a parking sign against the rear quarter panel.

2nd worst: Getting super pissed at someone driving slowly in the left lane, he clearly has acknowledged that I’m behind him and trying to get by, followed by much flashing and honking from me, then trying to pass him on the right and not seeing the car I almost merge into. Luckily no one was harmed but I felt like a dick. I’d like to think both me and left lane hogger was being equally dicky.

I backed my saturn into a retaining wall on the day I was trading it in. I parked my civic next to an asshat parker and got keyed. I drove through a red light because I was looking at the next red light. I got my jeep stuck in the mud with 5 people in it, needed to get towed out by my father’s Kubota.

I didn’t realize the parking lot I was in had cement curb parking space markers. I hit the gas forward when I left, bounced over the curb and slammed the inspection cover onto it, denting the cover and cracking the flywheel. I didn’t discover the broken flywheel until much later. It made a metallic ‘zinging’ sound from time to time when the flywheel rubbed against the inspection cover for months, until I pulled it off and actually looked at the damage.

First day I had my driver’s license I grabbed a buddy and drove to another state where I promptly got pulled over for turning the wrong way down a one way street. I noticed the sign as I was turning, and backed out to find a different route, but he pulled me over to check for a dui. He noticed my license issue date and bawled me out for going so far from home... Uhhh okay guy.

Also, one time the roads were wet and I almost understeered into a ditch by taking a tight turn to fast. Oh man, that was almost certainly the end of my car if that were to happen.

Well... my lovely mother recently battle rammed our oldest car (2001 5-speed Outback ) with our newest one (2014 Civic). She cannot drive in reverse; backing up out of our STRAIGHT driveway is a daily struggle for her. People who have that little control over what is going on when they are behind the wheel simply should not be driving. The new car only has a small dent/scrape in the bumper ...but she totaled our older car. The PS fender is destroyed and it would cost more than what the car is worth to fix. The worst part: this happened a week after my dad (who does not like cars and therefore viewed the work as a massive chore) patched up/painted all the rust spots in preparation for selling the Subaru... and I was going to get the proceeds to put towards a new car. So at least you did not do that! I am SO glad I’m probably moving out as soon as I have a car of my own again, my driveway is dangerous!
